The Game of Roulette

Learn the basics of Roulette game before you start playing for real money

Roulette is one of the oldest and most popular casino games in the world's online and offline casinos. It consists of a wheel with both 37 or 38 colorful stops and a ball that has equal chances to land in any of those stops.

Roulette is a game of chance whether you like it or not, so statistical measures cannot help you too much. Players make wagers by placing chips in the betting areas of the Roulette table.

After you place all bets, the dealer or a random number generator spins the wheel, which replaces the position of the ball. Participants collect the winning bets while the house collects all other wagers.

American Roulette is the most common form of roulette game. American Roulette wheel has thirty-eight numbers, including 1 to 36, a 0 ("Zero") and a 00 ("Double Zero") to increase casino house edge. European Roulette dominates Europe casinos. European Roulette has a smaller house edge and is therefore a more attractive option for roulette players. It is similar to American Roulette except it has one Zero stop instead of two.

The Rules:

The game of roulette allows you to place inside bets and outside bets, but general betting options will look like this:

Betting Options:
  • Certain Number
  • Combination of Numbers
  • Color of Numbers

Inside bets

Major difference between inside bets and outside bets is the table minimum. If the minimum bet for the table is 10 dollars, any and all outside bets must be at least 10 dollars. Inside bets on the other hand only have to add up to that sum. This means you can bet 1 dollar on ten different inside bet numbers for a table with a 10 dollars minimum bet.

  • Straight-up bet: this is the classic roulette bet or a bet on a single number. You place your chips on a single number on the inside board. If you win, this bet pays 35 to 1.
  • Split bet: you can place a single bet on two individual numbers if those numbers are beside each other on the table layout. To do so put your chips down on the line between them. This bet pays 17 to 1 if either one of those numbers appear.
  • Street bet: the street bet lets you choose three numbers on one bet. Again, the numbers need to be near one another, in the same row in fact. To bet on a row of three numbers place your chips on the line that is the outside edge of the row. This pays 11 to 1.
  • Corner bet: a corner bet is a combinational wager. It lets you bet on four numbers at one time. The numbers must be beside one another. To place this bet put your chips down on the intersecting point of all four numbers. This pays 8 to 1.
  • The Fiver number bet: there is only one five number bet available: you can win if any of 0, 00, 1, 2, or 3 are hit. You are paid 6 to 1. This is the worst bet in all of roulette betting.

Outside bets

The Outside bets are located along the outer edge of the table, and include all bets outside the central grid of numbers.

  • Red & Black: you simply choose the color of your bet. There is an area on the roulette table with the words red or black in them, and often with the color to match.
  • Odd & Even: this is an even money bet based on whether the number will be odd or even. You place your chips in the middle of the square marked even or the square marked odd.
  • Low & High: this bet gives you the option of betting that the number will be in the range from 1 to 18 or the range from 19 to 36. This is an Even money bet. To place this bet you will need to find the boxes with the appropriate number ranges printed on them on the table.
  • Columns: roulette rules also allow you to bet on ranges of numbers according to how they are arranged within the inside betting numbers grid. There are a set of three boxes, each corresponding to a column of numbers on the grid. You will see the words 2 to 1 written in them. If a number from within the column you are betting on comes up, you win.
  • Dozens: you split the 36 available numbers into dozens and bet on the resulting number being part of these ranges. The first dozen numbers include 1-12, the second dozen 13-24 and the third dozen numbers 25-36. You may find these bets simply labeled 1st 12, 2nd 12, 3rd 12. The bet pays 2 to 1.

These are the very basics of Roulette game and if you do not know them, you will not be able to play well. As you can see, this game is very friendly and inviting, so mastering roulette betting skills will open new doors for you.
