The Shinnecock tribe has recently received good news. A federal judge has recognized their right to build a casino on their reservation in Hampton Bays. However, this is more of a symbolic joy for while the U-S Bureau of Indian Affairs does not give them the license for building the casino the tribe cannot proceed with construction works.
Judge Thomas Platt has opened the way for the Shinnecock tribe to build a casino on their reservation, although his recognition has some ramifications. The Shinnecocks also claim over 350 acres in the East End of Long Island, saying that the New York State took their ancestral lands. Today, the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club and the Southampton College are located in that land, as well as many houses and enterprises.
