The Government is to take measures against online casinos that do not enforce the law. This law says that online casinos that are based in foreign countries must include a ban offering entry to online poker tournaments for free, as well as informing about the prize money. Many of those casinos did not apply the law and adopted a very particular approach regarding their adverts on taxis, print media or public transport.
Tessa Jowell, media and sport secretary, along with the Gambling Commission are to contact these foreign casinos and advertisers that did not apply the law in order to warn them. Next time they break the law, they will be prosecuted by the Crown Prosecution Service. Ms Jowell said that they have come to an agreement with the Gambling Commission to punish those who break the law, and they will not turn a blind eye to this issue.
After the Methodist Church complained about a poster advertising the online betting company Victor Chandler, the issue reached the Government. Methodists complained that the site was linking drinking with gambling, because it showed comedian Roland Rivron browsing the site in a bar. Their complaint was not accepted by the Advertising Standards Authority.
