History of Gambling

Before you start gambling online, you should carry brief gambling history investigation. Here you can enrich your knowledge regarding gambling history.

General Gambling History in Short

Gambling is a common term for various games. Different forms of gambling have their own very distinct history, but eventually find their way into each other. Gambling always was and will be an important part of history and prevailing form of entertainment for rich and poor all alike. According to historical records and archeological evidence, gambling has existed throughout the ages and culture of most civilizations. Anthropologists agree that data collected in the 20th century lends solid implications that gambling took place within a large portion of the greatest societies to have ever existed. For example, gambling artifacts have been recovered from ancient China (2300 B.C.), India, Egypt and Rome. A set of ivory dice dating from before 1500 BC were salvaged from Thebes, while specific writings mentioning gambling were found on a tablet in the Pyramid of Cheops. In the fourteenth century, gambling went through the process of legalization. King Henry VIII of England legalized gambling to avoid military dysfunction.

The Beginning of Card Playing

Paper was invented in China and it is likely that playing cards also originate from that ancient empire. Domino cards, which are the earliest recorded type of playing cards, represent the scores thrown by a pair of dice, much like contemporary domino tiles. Modern playing cards have evolved from ancient Chinese money cards, which comprised four suits (coins, strings of coins, myriads of strings, and tens of myriads of strings), each of which depicted various quantities of money. By the 1370s, playing cards had reached Europe in a form that is recognizable today, with a pack consisting of 52 cards with suits of swords, polo-sticks, cups and coins. Each suit contained the numbers one to ten, and three court, or picture, cards. The earliest cards were hand-painted with figures copied from manuscripts, but as printing developed, the designs were continually altered and redrawn. There were national variations in the suit symbols. Italy adopted coins, cups, swords and batons. Hearts, leaves, bells and acorns appeared on German cards. The symbols on modern playing cards (hearts, spades, diamonds, and clubs) originate from France. With the widespread availability of cards, people began to invent card games. In Europe, games like baccarat proved popular among members of the aristocracy, who gambled for huge stakes in luxurious surroundings.

Contemporary Gambling

The gambling casinos of today have come a long way since their early beginnings. Gambling was a universal phenomenon easily identified with European expansion into the "New World" of America. The sparseness and outlaw nature of the Wild West, not to mention the infamous Gold Rush, strongly influenced the development of modern day Las Vegas - the gambling Mecca of the world. Although casino gambling is not entirely welcome in all areas of the American continent, and is not fully embraced by the government, elsewhere in the world it continues to thrive, such as in England. The UK Gambling Bill is an unprecedented mark of legislative authority that proves just how effectively gambling can be regulated and used to the improvement of national economic welfare, while keeping in tact the social vulnerabilities that gambling had disrupted so vehemently in past civilizations.
